Jerry is not a bad name for a dog, as it happens. My views on regular human names as dog names can be examined at slightly more length here. My views on The Grateful Dead as a music-making entity can be found summarised here: that post is nearly twenty years old but I stand by the central opinions, i.e. the early-70s folky albums Workingman's Dead and (especially) American Beauty are the pinnacle of their recorded output: as a live spectacle I'm sure they were terrific if you were a) there in person and b) off your tits on some psychedelic substance or other to make you slightly more receptive to aimless vaguely-jazzy guitar noodling for tens of minutes at a time.
Garcia's public image as your slightly disreputable but essentially benign cuddly teddy-bear-ish psychedelic rock uncle is of course somewhat at odds with his being a ferocious heroin addict for much of his adult life, something which obviously contributed to his death at the age of only 53 (younger than me) in 1995 and made him, in the words of his own daughter, something of a "shitty father". As with Shane MacGowan, the romantic image of the elegantly wasted rock star is one thing, actually having to deal with the unpalatable day-to-day offstage realities is somewhat different. Some people find owning a dog to come with similar challenges, I expect.
